    Technology and religion: the parallels

Now if you want to draw parallels between religious cults and scientific cults, consider Anthropogenic Global Warming. I would expound on the subject but I just had lunch and don't feel like tossing my cookies right now.

    Technology and religion: the parallels

If you take the time to consider Islamic law including the Hadiths that are part of Sharia, then NO it is not true that religions are generally benign. Islam, one of the biggest religions in the world, has built-in admonitions to kill infidels who refuse conversion. They have admonitions on...

    The Alabama Ruling

Some religions claim that life begins either at separation of the umbilicus or at "first breath." SCOTUS missed the boat with Roe v. Wade because they disenfranchised all of Judaism (umbilicus.) I don't remember which denomination uses the King Solomon decision "the breath is the life" but...

    The Alabama Ruling

I will only say this, because I have family in Alabama and know them to be generally fair-minded, loving people. The central part of the state - which I define to include Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, and Montgomery and all immediately surrounding counties - is a stronghold of the Southern Baptist...

    Attachment to material things

Hmmm.... That rule would get rid of shi-tzus and chihuahuas.

I'm in love with a psychopath

If Bee's contention is true, then I am DEFINITELY not a psychopath (at least on that criterion). Once I start yawning, it's hard to stop.

Bill Nye: Fake climate evangelist or Messiah?

Bill Nye, like many other well-meaning people, has bought into climate alarmism.

    #MeToo and Movies

Which is why the system is skewed. Men NEVER know how a woman is going to react. How else would you explain the success of the "Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus" book?

    Attachment to material things

Know the feeling. For me, part of the reluctance is that Hurricane Katrina destroyed so many of my books that were in boxes in my back garage and I didn't have the choice, so I am really hesitant to let go of anything else. Yet there were times when I let things go voluntarily that didn't...

    #MeToo and Movies

I am not sure. The question is whether he had previous encounters with her such that she might have felt encouraged. If all the courage came from a bottle, that would be sexual battery. If some of the courage came from prior (even if ambiguous) conversations, it would be harder to tell.

    Advice to a younger self

Definitely, I would have cautioned my younger self about my then-casual attitude about sugar consumption. Also I might have had some advice about affairs of the heart. But then again, maybe not. I have told this story in other places but it is appropriate to the topic. When Johnny Carson...

    Hillary the Time Traveller

Actually, the Americanism "I could care less" is a shortened usage from "As if I could care less" - which makes more sense. Americans shorten everything verbally. Between heavy use of contractions and acronyms, we engage in verbal shorthand so much that it is no small wonder you folks don't...

    Feeling weird after coffee

It is possible to make it seem as though you have developed a tolerance, but the truth is that when you try to break your habit, you have a stronger reaction. And the more it seems you have developed your tolerance, the harder it will be to break the habit.

Alkaloids ARE addictive. Caffeine, nicotine, morphine... all of them can hook you severely.

    The morality of catch-22

I'm not a lawyer, but that is my understanding of the issue. 5th Amendment says you cannot be forced to testify on a matter that would incriminate you. Like, accomplices to a crime can't be forced to testify against their boss unless they have an immunity deal for that crime. But where the...

    The morality of catch-22

Ah, I see where you are going - but no, the 5th Amendment doesn't apply since presenting the unredacted document wouldn't be testifying against himself. This is where the Entrapment Doctrine would apply - conflicting and mutually exclusive actions, each required by a different law or legal action.

    Feeling weird after coffee

Your friend was probably "wired" for several hours after that. Two normal cups of Navy coffee (non-decaf) was enough to make me feel different.

    Hillary the Time Traveller

No, she's just backwards as part of her nature. As to the sniper, it is obvious that for HIS country we should have done some sniper training. Such abysmal performance! But then, it was possible I suppose that he knew more about her than met the eye at the time and perhaps thought he would be...

    The morality of catch-22

There have been attempts to plead the 5th Amendment rights when before congress. That could lead to the issue of Congress "reluctantly" granting him immunity if he would give them enough to take down Trump. However, I think there are a few more twists and turns to be had before it gets that far.

Does argument entrench or shift perspective?

If he can, that merely strengthens my gas analogy.
