    Voting is pointless

Doc, I like inversion to see things from a different perspective. There are a few comments I will make. Firstly, while it is possible, it is very unlikely to happen, like winning the lottery. Secondly, there is an opportunity cost to you voting, time taken, costs getting there and so on. Third...

Before the Big Bang, there was...

If you enjoy science, then this is a great resource: https://www.youtube.com/user/worldsciencefestival/videos I've watched plenty of stuff from there on the Universe, Quantum Mechanics et al. Also, this is a great video on Quantum Mechanics. 6M+ views.

Before the Big Bang, there was...

I don't understand this. Time is just a word used to describe a phenomenon. The fact that you mention "several hundred thousand years" means you have used the non-useable! Uncle, I think a lot of physicists think that everything will become so far apart that we end up in like a slow death. You...

Thanks AI. Feeling slightly better. I actually ate a meal last night!

    Voting is pointless

Because of the very emotive nature of this argument, there are a lot of surrounding factors brought into it, such as, "We died for the right to vote." "It is your responsibility and civic duty to vote." And so on. I've heard them all! Including the "You get the government you deserve." But that...

    Voting is pointless

Doc, one retort I have received is, "If everybody thought that way, then nobody would vote." My reply is, "If everybody thought that way, then I would vote as it would then have some 'weight.'" I would argue, however, that in elections, even low voter turnout makes the chances of your vote...

    The Universe is expanding into...

...what? What is beyond the edge of the universe? They used to say the universe was infinite in size, but it seems that they are now saying it is expanding. But if it is expanding infinitely, I presume that means it will never reach an infinite size.

Tagline for The Mind Tavern logo - suggestions?

I feel a bit stupid for coming up with nearly the same idea twice, but thinking it was original the second time too. :giggle:

    The Administrator is ill!

Thanks all. Feeling a bit better today, although I have done my back in from sleeping on the sofa yesterday for about 8 hours during the daytime. Hopefully, I can get some normality back soon. My mum comes out of hospital next Tuesday, supposedly. Physios want to keep her in for 5 more days.

Before the Big Bang, there was...

Well, what was there? If we believe in cause and effect, what was the causes? And something has just come to mind: in "what" was the singularity? Another universe? Dangling in mid-air? There must have been something for it to be in, surely?

Does Quantum Mechanics defeat Occam's Razor?

Whenever I hear someone state Occam's Razor in an argument, I am immediately skeptical. Just take Quantum Mechanics as an example. It is incredible complex and counter-intuitive. What are your thoughts? Prove me wrong, using a simple explanation as that will help prove Occam's Razor by example. :D

    The Administrator is ill!

The problem is, when someone has a bug, you just have to touch a door handle and I can pick it up from there. I am known for opening doors with the back of my hand when out in public. I am a bit like Niles from Frasier in that regard. :giggle:

    The Administrator is ill!

My father had either food poisoning or a stomach bug. He puked all over the carpet, which I had to clean up. Now I have it too. My aim was a bit better - down the toilet! Feeling utterly pants right now. I hadn't eaten for 24 hours so thought I would have an ice cream. Not 100% sure it was a...

    What really annoys you?

Google did their recent demo of their automated voice booking system, where they ring up the restaurant and book a table for you. Have you seen that?

    What really annoys you?

I find those computerised telesales calls that have started recently. It sounds like a person, but you are actually speaking to a bot! They have pre-programmed responses, depending on what you say. So I ask some stupid question and their reply can't cope. That's all I need before putting the...

    Charity begins at home

What do people mean when they say this? Is it that they disagree with contributing to charity? Or just that they disagree with payments that go to a cause outside their home, with home defined as either their own family or their country?
