    Is the death penalty immoral?

Fallibility I see Doc’s post setting out the assumption we are to make when considering this matter. But the fact that we need to set out those assumptions says it all. The justice system is fallible because humans are fallible. The most common argument against the death penalty is that...

    Is the death penalty immoral?

I’m aware that some people may be put off by very long posts, so I’m going to break this one down into a number of smaller posts, which tackle roughly the following: Purpose of prison - discussed here: https://themindtavern.com/community/threads/purpose-of-prison.124/ Right to live - discussed...

I think we all have a lot to say and it's interesting seeing the different angles that people use in response to posts. It's beginning to feel like a snug little community!

The Hexaco Personality Inventory test - take it now!

I did this assessment a while back and learned a couple of things about myself. Areas where I scored higher on the test than my own assessment, included: Sincerity, fairness, sentimentality, patience, conscientiousness, and unconventionality. Those aspects were significantly above the mean...

Tagline for The Mind Tavern logo - suggestions?

I still prefer: I think, therefore I'm here. It's clever. Would be even smarter in Latin, but I don't speak dead languages ;)

What does it mean to live a good life?

Okay, but you can complete all the tasks on your Grid every day, or fundraise for your chosen charity, but still kick the cat on the way past. It doesn't seem like it's enough to simply strive for excellence.

    "Tinycards" from Duolingo

My point is, if it's wrong in a language I know, how can I trust it with a language I don't?

But how accurate is GT? I know sufficient French to know when GT picks up the wrong context.

What does it mean to live a good life?

The concept of purposeful living, striving for excellence is appealing. But how does that translate into action and principles?

What does it mean to live a good life?

We talk about morality, religion, codes to live by. But what does it actually mean to live a good life? Discuss.

No, I can do that in sign language :) I'm learning Irish because it's a source of great shame to me that I can't speak my mother-tongue.

Pretty much. There's about 3 million living in Wales and just under 5 million living in Ireland - but the numbers of people who speak Welsh or Irish are significantly fewer.

    "Tinycards" from Duolingo

I'm sure that's true. It's a hellishly difficult language - and I only know a handful of speakers.

    "Tinycards" from Duolingo

I quite like Duolingo. I was using it to learn Irish, but I could never keep a streak going. Once things have calmed down a bit here (I'm moving house) I'll try to get back into it, although I'm also currently learning British Sign Language and learning 2 languages at once might make my brain go...

Thank you so much for this. Other people have recommended Headspace to me, but I have never really felt like it would be of benefit. However, the appreciation meditation sounds right up my street. And dogs. Love dogs.

Oh for the love of food...

I'm really bored by eating the same things. I've lost all interest in food - to me it's now a fuel rather than a pleasure. I've spent the afternoon today defrosting my freezer - and now it's completely empty, so I have the added job of thinking what to put in it. (No, Jon - filling it with...

    Off yer head

For the benefit of other members, Jon and I are having a competition as to who can garner the most 'Likes' on our posts. Jon is winning because: a) He creates almost all of the threads, and b) As an admin, he has the ability to cheat. So, now we are trading 'Likes' and he's worried that I will...
