Yet if someone attacks you and you don't defend yourself, it could be a bloodbath. So inaction by pacifism could lead to the slaughter of millions of Jews. Wait, that happened!

It did indeed. And we should learn from it. That's why the following poem (written by Martin Niemoller) is so important - and is found at many Holocaust Memorial locations, particularly in the US:

First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a socialist.
Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a trade unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

The morals of intervention become even more complex when you toss religion into the mix, since religion claims to be the source of morality. So when two religions and two different moral viewpoints become involved, BOTH claim divine support for their position. Do you step aside and let those OTHER heathens destroy themselves?

I hesitate to become specific because this could easily become a "bashing" session. I won't do that because it IS a hornet's nest that I would "whack" if I started getting specific.
