What do you think about homeless people?

You just reminded me of Doreens' story

What do you think about homeless people?

@Jon With written exchanges it's very easy to miscommunicate sometimes: I led you to believe that I disagreed about what you wrote. In fact, I agreed on both your statements: decision making as well as luck determine your quality of life. I'd go as far as saying, the higher-quality your...

What do you think about homeless people?

Very true about luck but, as for decision making, if your cognitive processes are somehow impaired or clouded, how can you be expected to make sound decisions?

What do you think about homeless people?

I know two people that either were or are currently homeless. In both cases they (from my own point of view) got stuck in certain "mental loops", i.e. one of them - while boasting extremely impressive professional credentials - insisted on working only in a very specific sector and refused to...

What do you think about homeless people?

Thanks @Jon and, to be clear, I don't think issues should be framed within a binary approach either. Certainly not homelessness anyway. I like the 'gradient' framework you mentioned, it sounds akin to what I tend to use when talking about mental health in general. But that's a story for...

What do you think about homeless people?

In a recent politics discussion I posted a diagram about the traditional left-wing Vs. right-wing ideologies. The diagram also includes homeless people where they are described either as "downtrodden, victims of the system" or people with "no work ethic, no sense of shame". What is your view?

Covid-19: health and safety best practices

Thanks Jon - Let's see if Doc votes in the next few days. I don't suppose other people are around at the moment, so maybe after he votes we can open it up for discussion, what do you think? By the way, I was unsure I posed the question correctly, so I edited the opening post, I hope it's clear...

Covid-19: health and safety best practices

I was about to post a general thread about Covid-19 but then I realised AP has already one. However I thought I'd at least poll what people think about masks, and take it from there. EDIT - To clarify: by "wearing" I do not mean just "wearing". I also meant "operating", i.e. donning the mask...

    The art of negotiation

Now, come on Bee. When she was in power she did say "No deal with the EU is still better than a bad deal". Now, how can you say she can't negotiate when she clearly must have read Negotiating for Dummies?

Grammatical errors that drive you bonkers

The inability, for many people, to differentiate between its and it's. The rule is very simple: if it means it is or it has then you can use it's. If it doesn't mean either it is or it has then it can only be its. Which is why it's puzzling why many people get it wrong.

    Tony Robbins

Robbins is, first and foremost, a brand. But I like the way he challenges conventional thinking and always brings the issues back to yourself. We always think the problem is outside, and most of the time the problem is within ourselves.

    Form vs Substance in politics

Well, at least we seem to agree on one of Trump's distinctive styles. ;)

    Form vs Substance in politics

I thought yours was a general question about whether Trump's tax cuts were good overall. In that Wikipedia page I cited earlier I could not find any direct link between those cuts and employment/unemployment. Having said that, I will say that in general, any tax cut to business carries the...

    Form vs Substance in politics

When I have more time I will comment on the broader typical Democratic Vs Republican approach to the US economy, but reading the Wikipedia entry on Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 this stands out for me: (emphasis mine)

    Form vs Substance in politics

So I just googled "fauci don't wear mask" and I've found these two links https://www.businessinsider.com/fauci-doesnt-regret-advising-against-masks-early-in-pandemic-2020-7?IR=T What I see here is that he was protecting healthcare workers, and this is what I seem to remember as well. Can...

    Form vs Substance in politics

Oh wow, Obama did that? :unsure:Then it must be good! Seriously, this is not a partisan issue for me. You might as well swap Trump with Pence. I do dislike Trump but I like Pence. I don't think Trump is a patriot, but I do think Pence is.

Yes, but @Jon is not a source :)

    Form vs Substance in politics

I'm glad we're both using the same source. GDP If you show the GDP as an absolute figure, whichever administration is in charge at the present time will look like they are doing a good job. This is because the US economy has been by and large on an uptrend since they started measuring it...
